HIP HYP HOORAY

Tomorrow's HYP Fest - or Harmonious Youth Participation Festival as it's more formally known - has plenty of local government support for its aim of promoting cross cultural awareness.

Moreland, Hobsons Bay, Hume and Whittlesea councils are all backing the Brunswick event, which features global food and music.

BETTER DEAL FOR KIDS

The impact of increased state government funding to support vulnerable families appears to be showing through in the latest national figures on child protection. New statistics show only a 1.6% rise in notifications in Victoria, compared with a 16% rise nationally.

Many allegations of child abuse are now referred to family support services rather than the child protection system. State funding for family services has increased to a projected $53.5 million this year.
